Terry Bales

Terry W. Bales

Professor of TV / Video Communications & Film
Department Chair

Terry Bales has been a professor at Santa Ana College since 1971 and has taught over 20,000 students in courses dealing with all aspects of the print and electronic media.  These include classes in Film and Television History, Broadcast News Production, Mass Media and Society, Intro to Electronic Media, Print Journalism, and Public Relations.  He holds advanced degrees in Journalism and U.S. Social History from the University of Southern California and has also done graduate work at UCLA and the American Film Institute.  Honors include graduating summa cum laude from USC, being elected to Phi Beta Kappa and being selected as the USC School of Journalism’s Outstanding Graduate for 1967.  He was a National Defense ACT Title IV Fellow at USC Graduate School.

In 1986 Bales was chosen as the Broadcast News Adviser of the Year by the national College Media Advisers and in 1987 was named the second Distinguished Faculty Lecturer in Santa Ana College history.  SAC print and broadcast majors have received nearly 100 national awards under his guidance including having the top College TV Newscast in the nation as judged by CNN in 1998 and 1999.

Bales served as adviser to the campus newspaper el Don from 1971 to 1984 and helped create the Santa Ana College TV station (located at the Centennial Education Center) in 1984.  He then launched a weekly TV news program “Around and About Orange County” where students write, produce, shoot, and edit a program that covers OC news, sports, entertainment, and business.  “AAOC” is currently seen on the Adelphia Cable outlets in Orange County and recently marked its 500th news show.  In 1995 Bales assisted SAC students in establishing the first Spanish-language college newscast in the nation called “Noticiero Latino del Condado de Orange,” which now alternates with “AAOC.”

When not serving as a media “guru” at SAC and the new Santiago Canyon College, Bales moonlights as a sports correspondent for ESPN/Sportsticker.  He covers the Anaheim Angels, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Los Angeles Kings, USC football, and some Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers games for the internet service.  In the past he has reported on seven Super Bowls, 16 Rose Bowls, the NBA and NCAA basketball championships, seven World Series, and various professional All-Star games.  Prior to joining ESPN/Sportsticker in 1992, Bales did similar work for the United Press International wire service from 1966-91.

Bales is proudest of the fact that more than 250 recent alumni of SAC media programs have found full-time employment.  These include comedian Will Ferrell of “Saturday Night Live;” news anchor Deborah Takahara of NBC’s affiliate in San Diego; sportscaster Jeff Fischel of the CNN/SI network; and news reporter Vicente Serrano of Univision Phoenix.  Bales feels that all have benefited from the TV/Video Department’s commitment to hands-on training with the latest state-of-the-art equipment available at SAC-TV.
